"Should" Statements: The “Shouldy” Approach to Life!
What’s the harm in telling yourself, “I should be better”? Or telling your child, “You shouldn’t act like that”? Here's why. Should statements arguably account for most of the world's emotional suffering—fueling depression, anxiety, inadequacy, and hatred. In this video, Dr. David Burns explores one of the most destructive thinking distortions: Should Statements. Based on the work of psychologist Albert Ellis, “shoulds” tend to fall into three categories: 👉 Self-directed: “I shouldn’t be so screwed up," or "I should be better than I am!" 👉 Other-directed: “You shouldn’t behave like that," or "You shouldn't feel that way!" 👉 World-directed: “This shouldn’t be happening. This is unfair!” These distorted expectations often go unnoticed, but they can lead to guilt, shame, anxiety, anger, and broken relationships. You’ll hear a powerful story about a mother who felt ashamed of her child’s learning disabilities—and ashamed of her own shame—until one subtle but meaningful shift helped her reconnect with compassion. 💡 Learn how to challenge the rigid “rules” you place on yourself, others, and the world. 👇 Try the Feeling Great app for free: https://feelinggreat.app.link/xJybmHZ... 👉 Subscribe for more insights on anxiety and depression from Dr. David Burns and the Feeling Great team: @FeelingGreatApp ABOUT THE “FEELING GREAT” APP 😊 Feeling Great is a new mobile app inspired by the groundbreaking work of world-renowned psychiatrist and author, Dr. David Burns.
