TRIESTE - Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore

The church of Santa Maria Maggiore is also known as the Baroque church of the Jesuits and is located in the center of Trieste, right above the amphitheater. The first stone was laid on 10 October 1627 by Bishop Rinaldo Scarlicchio of Trieste. However, the church building took decades to complete. The church was consecrated on 11 October 1682. The dome was completed only in 1817. Outside, the facade of the church is in the Baroque style, the only one in this style in Trieste. The interior has a Latin cross plan divided into three naves, the dome was built in 1817 and frescoed by Giuseppe Bernardino Bison with the Four Evangelists and false architectures. The main altar is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. It was built between 1672 and 1717. On both sides of the tabernacle are the marble statues of the saints Ignatius of Loyola, Luigi Gonzaga, Francesco Borgia and Francesco Saverio. The altar continues optically in the apse mural with a depiction of the Immaculate Conception, frescoed in 1842 by Sebastiano Santi (Sebastiano Santi was a painter specialized in the fresco technique. He was one of the most prolific artists of his time, capable of mastering the most varied pictorial techniques (oil, tempera, fresco) to produce both small-scale works and monumental works).
