No Consequences? No Tension. No Game.

No Consequences? No Tension. No Game. In OSR play, character death—and real consequences—are what create tension. And without tension, the dungeon isn’t a game anymore. In this video, I lay out my approach to PC death in old-school D&D and OSR-style campaigns: the risk must be real, but it shouldn’t be overwhelming. I don’t advocate random slaughter, I rarely use “save or die” gotchas, and I strongly prefer giving players clear warning signs and a real chance to withdraw, regroup, and come back with a smarter plan. We’ll talk about how to telegraph danger fairly, why retreat is a feature (not a failure), and how death becomes the result of a chain of player decisions—not a referee ambush. I also explain why I rarely allow Raise Dead or Resurrection. And when I do, the cost isn’t gold—it’s service to the church, dangerous quests, oaths, and consequences that force the surviving PCs to make yet another meaningful decision. This is a collaboration with JoeTheLawyer, Joe Bloch (Greyhawk Grognard), and Don Semora of Wizard Tower Games. Use the YouTube collab links to watch the other perspectives and compare approaches. Comment question: Where’s your line? How lethal should OSR play be, and what makes a character's death feel fair at your table?
