Fuente de los leones - Josema García Hormigo | Coro Nubah

Since we lack recordings from that era, understanding everything solely through scores or texts, which are often imprecise, proves challenging. Nevertheless, the enduring relevance of this music makes its comprehension attainable. In seeking out characteristics and references from each culture, I observed that despite being distinct musical traditions, they share significant points of connection. They are primarily distinguished by certain textural and structural configurations, yet they share an organic approach in the pursuit of an authentic sound. This led me to abandon the idea of creating a tripartite work that would explore each tradition separately. Instead, I ultimately opted for a miscellaneous composition, erasing the boundaries between cultures. Polyphony, modality, "improvisation," unison, and hemiolas are some of the materials employed to construct this piece, always retaining a certain familiarity with the gestural language of those centuries. The poetic concept of the composition revolves around the Court of the Lions at the Alhambra, serving as the setting for the narrative. This is why the text found on the basin of the Lion Fountain is used. Beyond the praises for the emir, a poetic idea unfolds, where time seems to freeze in the presence of a mythological creature.
