Rediscovering Korea: Daegu Metropolitan City, Where Yesterday and Today Meet 1. Palgongsan Mountain, the Symbol of Dalgubeol - Donghwasa Temple and Gatbawi Rock Palgongsan Mountain, with its breathtaking landscape and rich cultural heritage sites that embody Daegu's history from the Silla Dynasty to the Joseon Dynasty, is a symbol of Daegu. Donghwasa Temple, a thousand-year-old temple imbued with the energy of phoenixes, said to appear only in times of peace, and the auspicious paulownia tree, is where Samyeongdaesa, who raised an army of monks during the Imjin War, established the Yeongnam Monk Commandery and commanded his troops. Also, the Gwanbong Stone Seated Buddha, better known as "Gatbawi Rock," at 850 meters above sea level, is another of Palgongsan's true wonders. This Buddha statue's hat, shaped like a college mortarboard, is so reminiscent of a university mortarboard that every year around this time, long lines of people praying for success in the college entrance exams form. Visit Palgongsan Mountain, which embodies the nation's peace and well-being, and the small and large hopes for life. Stop by the historic site of General Shin Sung-gyeom at the foot of Palgongsan Mountain to pay tribute to his patriotism and loyalty as a founding father of the Goryeo Dynasty. 2. Tradition Lives On - Daegu's Only Medicinal Herb Market Daegu boasts Korea's only "medicinal herbal market," named after its royal decree. It was once a distribution center for high-quality medicinal herbs, with the royal court selecting the ingredients before herbalists from across the country gathered to trade. Today, over 200 traditional Korean medicine clinics, herbal medicine stores, and herbal medicine shops continue its 350-year history. Daegu, a transportation hub since ancient times thanks to the development of waterways and land routes, including the Nakdong River and Mungyeong Pass, boasted a remarkable number of large markets, so much so that it was said that goods from the three southern provinces converged there. We met with Lee Yong-sik, the owner of a third-generation herbal medicine shop in Yakryeongsi, to hear the simple stories of life woven into the marketplace. 3. Intoxicated by the Scent of Art in Alleyways - Artist Street and the Road of Re-drawing Down alleyways in Daegu are remnants of teahouses and music studios that served as spaces for creative thought and reflection for countless refugee artists during the Korean War. One such space is "Nokhyang," a classical music studio that has been in operation for two generations since opening in 1946. Lee Jung-seob painted on the silver foil inside cigarette packs, and leading writers of the time, including Cho Ji-hoon, Park Mok-wol, and Gu Sang, wrote here. The cultural and artistic spirit that permeated the alleyways of Jung-gu half a century ago is now reviving at Bangcheon Market in Jung-gu. Starting with the 350-meter mural street honoring the late Daegu native and singer Kim Kwang-seok, young artists are flocking to this area, transforming the once-decaying traditional market into a vibrant cultural hub. Let's explore Jung-gu Artists' Street, where music emanating from old gramophones evokes a sense of nostalgia. 4. 100-Year History Street and Cheongna Hill The alleys of downtown Daegu, nicknamed "100-Year History Street" for their 100-year history, are lined with Western-style houses, churches, cathedrals, and schools built by missionaries. These venerable buildings evoke a sense of stepping back in time. Cheongna Hill, the setting for the song "Thinking of a Comrade," houses the second-generation descendants of the first Western apple tree in Korea, brought to Korea in 1899 by Dr. Johnson, the first director of Dongsan Medical Center, for missionary purposes. This offers a glimpse into the history of Daegu, the City of Apples. The 100-Year History Street is also where the Daegu Independence Movement of 1919 began. At the end of the alley stands the preserved home of national poet Lee Sang-hwa, famous for his poem "Does Spring Come to the Stolen Fields?", offering a glimpse into the spirit of resistance during the dark days of Japanese colonial rule. Stroll along the alleys of Daegu, where the breath of 100 years of turbulent modern and contemporary history lives on. 5. Ripening Red in Autumn - Pyeonggwang-dong Apple Village Daegu apples, pioneered by missionaries and now a representative specialty of Daegu, are a key ingredient in the growing season. Pyeonggwang-dong apples, in particular, are known for their crisper flavor and less softening than apples from other regions, thanks to the area's climate and soil, which experience significant daily temperature fluctuations. Pyeonggwang-dong, Daegu's only remaining collective apple orchard, preserves the pride of Daegu apples. An 83-year-old Hongok tree, the oldest in the country, still bears red fruit. Woo Chae-jeong, the grandfather who nurtured it with care for eighty years, has kept it as his own, f...
