On Roda Viva, journalist Vera Magalhães interviews samba musician Nei Lopes. A self-taught Africanist, he has published seven dictionaries and an encyclopedia on African cultures, a body of work exceeding 30,000 entries. His Dictionary of the Social History of Samba, co-authored with Luiz Antonio Simas, won the 2016 Jabuti Prize in the category of Literary Theory/Criticism, Dictionaries and Grammars. With degrees in Law and Social Sciences from UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), he traded the legal field for music, literature, and research on African languages ​​and culture. Lopes has over 350 compositions recorded by major names in Brazilian music, working across various genres ranging from samba to maracatu, jongo, and choro.
