Whirligigs by Kevin Burke

Kevin’s delightful whirligigs, whether they depict a bird, a fish, or a scene from everyday life, are whimsical works of folk art sure to put a smile on your face. They will be the highlight of your garden and a sure conversation piece. Born in Ottawa, Kevin Burke grew up in a creative environment surrounded by craftsmen and hobbyists with a strong rural tradition. Passionate about architecture and driven by the desire to build, Kevin began his apprenticeship in the construction industry at the age of 14. After having worked in installation and sales, he devoted himself to home renovation and new builds. He retired in 1997 to take on handy-man jobs and began constructing garden art. During a contract, he was asked to replace the wings of a whirligig representing a snow goose. As a a true woodworker, he made several of them, one of which he donated in a silent auction for the Wakefield Hospital. The winner of the gig invited him to see her collection of antique weathervanes, and a new passion was born! Né à Ottawa, Kevin Burke a grandi dans un milieu créatif entouré d'artisans et de bricoleurs dotés d’une riche tradition rurale. Passionné d’architecture et animé par le désir de bâtir, Kevin commence dès l’âge de 14 ans son apprentissage dans le secteur de la construction. Après avoir travaillé dans l'installation et la vente, il se lance dans la rénovation et la construction domiciliaires. En 1997, il prend sa retraite et se charge de petits travaux manuels tout en créant des œuvres d’art de jardin. Lors d'un contrat, on lui demande de remplacer les ailes d'une girouette représentant une oie des neiges. En vrai menuisier, il en fabrique plusieurs dont l’une est offerte dans une vente aux enchères silencieuse pour l'hôpital de Wakefield. La gagnante l’invite à voir sa collection de girouettes anciennes, et c’est ainsi que naît une une nouvelle passion! Depuis, Kevin a réalisé plus d’une centaine de girouettes.
