But if they keep buying goods while selling them, debt will pile up and the deficit will grow. Dollars will pile up and the surplus will grow. Is that right? That's the problem. But if debt and deficits pile up too much, isn't trust in the dollar under threat? People start to think about this, and borrowing becomes very difficult. Because there's so much debt, confidence in US Treasury bonds erodes, causing interest rates to soar. It becomes difficult for the US to borrow money. This isn't sustainable. Didn't it wipe out the deficit? So, starting in the early 1990s, the US achieved a decade of super-strong economic growth, and the 1990s are often referred to as Pax Americana. What happened to Japan? They created a bubble and bought it. They overdid it. That bubble burst. It sank. Now it's starting to rise. So what this means is that the US shifts the axis of demand, making changes every once in a while. By refreshing it like this, they're clearing out this trade deficit.
