Everyone knows that ancient humans split stone to create a sharp edge, which could then be used for a variety of everyday tasks: butchering carcasses and cutting meat, scraping hides, planing wood, and so on. For many millennia, stone was the primary raw material from which any tool could be made. But stone splitting is a complex and often multi-variant system, in which a craftsman could choose a variety of solutions. What is needed to split stone? Where can one find suitable stone raw materials? What tools did ancient humans need not just to split stone but also to obtain the desired shape for the future tool blank? Why do archaeologists conduct stone splitting experiments? Tatyana Shevchenko, a research assistant at the joint NSU-IAE SB RAS Paleotechnology Educational and Scientific Laboratory (part of the New Archeology Research Center of the NSU Humanities Institute), explains this.
