Beyond the Ball: What Soccer Tells Us About Italian Identity Today | Italian Listening B1-B2
[B1/B2] I am not someone who loves football. I don't follow matches, and I don't know the players. Yet, when I read an article about Italy failing to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time, I had to stop and reflect. Because behind the sports scores, there was a much more uncomfortable question: Who is a real Italian? In today's episode of Italiano a modo mio, we exit the classroom to look at contemporary Italian society through the lens of sports, modern laws, and social stagnation. In this episode, we will cover: ⚽ A Historic Football Collapse: Italy won the World Cup in 2006, but has failed to qualify in 2018, 2022, and now 2026—a decline no other former champion has ever experienced. 📜 The Citizenship Problem: How the strict rule of Ius Sanguinis (citizenship by bloodline) shapes the country, and how the recent 2025 reform limits citizenship by descent to the second generation. 🗳️ The 2025 Referendum: An analysis of the recent national vote on citizenship, where the lack of a quorum revealed a deep social division and general apathy. 🌍 A Comparison with Europe: Looking at how countries like France, Germany, or Spain evolved by opening up to multiculturalism, while Italy looks on from the sidelines. 🏎️ Beyond Soccer: How younger generations (Gen Z) are moving away from football toward tennis (with Sinner), MotoGP (Bagnaia), and volleyball. ✨ THE INTROVERT CHECK-IN: What do you think about this? How is the concept of identity and citizenship perceived in your own country? Share your reflection in the comments using a few words or a short sentence in Italian—I love reading your perspectives!
