Lake Tazawa is located in the middle-eastern part of Akita Prefecture and is a mysterious lake with a maximum depth of 423.4 meters, the deepest lake in Japan. The statue is a bronze statue of Princess Tatsuko, who became the goddess of the lake, and it is said that when she drank water from the spring at Goza-no-Ishi Shrine at the behest of the gods, her body changed and she took the form of a dragon. The Goza-no-Ishi Shrine, dedicated to the goddess Tatsuko, is located on the northern shore of Lake Tazawa. The name "Goza-no-Ishi" comes from the fact that the lord of the Akita clan used to sit and rest on the flat rocky shore of the lake. Today, a vermilion-lacquered torii gate stands on the Goza-no-Ishi. The main hall of the Goza-no-Ishi shrine, which enshrines the lake goddess Tatsuko, also has a sacred spring called Katagashira no Reisen, where, according to legend, Tatsuko drank the water and took the form of a dragon. Tazawako Kogen is a hot spring resort located to the east of Lake Tazawako, with a panoramic view of Lake Tazawako in front of you. On the way from Tazawako Kogen to Nyuto Onsen area, a large secondary forest of beech trees has been protected. It is rare for a beech tree to become a second forest (secondary forest) because it grows slowly and its place is occupied by other trees. Akita Komagatake is an active volcano with an elevation of 1,637 meters, and Tazawako Kogen is its trailhead. Akita Komagatake is a treasure trove of hundreds of species of alpine plants, and from the summit you can see the magnificent mountain ranges of Mt Chokai and Mt Iwate. There is also a large ski resort in the middle of Mt. Akita Komagatake, where winter sports and activities are popular. Tazawako is one of the most famous places to see autumn leaves in Akita Prefecture.
