#clubhistorics #dodgem37 #M37 Dodge M 37 3/4 ton 4x4 truck | American Military Vehicle Dodge M37 G-741 Series After lengthy discussions between the government and Chrysler during 1948 and early 1949 regarding new improvements and their corresponding prices, the purchase order for 2,490 trucks of the new M37 model was finally signed in July 1949: 1,898 without a winch and 592 with a winch. These new vehicles bear the SNL (Standard Nomenclature List) number G-741, with a T-245 engine. Unlike their WWII predecessors, such as the WC-51 and WC-52, the M37s use the same chassis for both those with and without a winch. They use a kit that bolts to the chassis. It was widely used by the United States Army during the Korean War. In the 1970s, it was replaced by the 1.5-ton Kaiser M715 commercial trucks (late 1960s) and Dodge's M880/M890 series (1970s). Six prototypes of the vehicle were produced, based on the Dodge WC series vehicles used in World War II. Many of the M37's components are similar or identical to the World War II vehicle, and many shortcomings of the earlier series were corrected in the M37. Production of the M37 began in earnest in 1950, with approximately 11,000 vehicles manufactured by the end of that year. By mid-1954, 63,000 vehicles had been produced. In 1958, a series of design modifications resulted in the new vehicles being designated the M37B1. From April 1958 to April 1960, production was halted. From mid-1960 until the end of production in 1967, 47,600 M37B1 vehicles and their various models were produced. They were assembled in Detroit, USA. Approximately 4,500 M37CDN vehicles and their various models were also produced for the Canadian Army at the factory in Ontario, Canada. Between 1951 and 1955, approximately 4,500 M37CDN vehicles and their various models were produced. All of these vehicles continued in service in several countries, including Spain. In total, between 1949 and 1967, approximately 115,000 Dodge M37s and their various models were produced. In the 1970s and 1980s, these vehicles were commonly found at government auctions. Many of the vehicles were transferred to civilian agencies, and some are still in use today in rural areas. They were out of significant military service by the late 1970s, replaced by the M715 and M880 series. The engine was identical to the World War II-era WC vehicle line, as was most of the powertrain. The T-245 for those manufactured in Detroit, USA, and the T-249 for those assembled in Ontario, Canada. Many shortcomings with the aging design became apparent by the 1960s, including the tendency of the connecting rods to fail at high rpm due to the engine's long cylinder stroke. As the average speed of military vehicles increased, these engine failures became common due to the vehicle's low gear ratio, which was originally designed as a multipurpose vehicle capable of carrying heavy ammunition loads.
