During today's proceedings, Advocate Andrea Johnson was questioned about allegations that IDAC investigator Sunil Bellochan, accompanied by several other IDAC members, visited Fani Nkosi in prison shortly after Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala allegedly rejected a proposed plea agreement. According to what was discussed before the Commission, the purpose of that prison visit became a major point of contention. Questions were raised about whether investigators were attempting to obtain information linking Cat Matlala to senior SAPS officials, including National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola and Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, among others. However, the Commission heard that Fani Nkosi allegedly responded that he knew nothing about any relationship involving Cat Matlala, General Masemola or General Kumalo. Instead, it was stated that the only names he associated with Cat Matlala were Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya and Major General Feroz Khan. What makes the sequence of events particularly significant is the timing. The alleged prison visit is said to have taken place on 13 July—the same day Cat Matlala allegedly rejected a plea proposal after reportedly seeking an eight-year sentence while prosecutors insisted on twelve years.
