The "Book of HenrykÓw" is our national treasure, as it is in it that the first sentence in Polish was written. In today's episode of "Lower Silesian Mysteries," together with Joanna Lamparska, we will uncover the secrets of this unique incunabulum (old print). The Book of HenrykÓw is truly a script for a good series about the Middle Ages. When and why was the "Book of HenrykÓw" created, and what secrets are still hidden within? It's long been known that there are treasures more precious than gold. An example is original medieval manuscripts, whose pages immortalize images of times long gone. One such great – perhaps the greatest – Polish treasure is the "Book of Henryków," and the latest episode of "Lower Silesian Mysteries" will be dedicated to it, which you can watch this Sunday on radiowrocław.pl and on our YouTube channel. This time, together with Joanna Lamparska, we will attempt to reread the story of the Henryków Cistercians, as contained in this most famous medieval "Polish" book. In fact, we learn about the Book of Henryków in school because of book 10, where the names Brukalice and Boguchwał appear. This is the first Polish sentence. Exactly – this sentence was supposedly spoken to his wife by a servant of the Duke of Wrocław, Bogusław the First, the Tall. This servant was the aforementioned Boguchwał – a Czech by birth, who, together with his wife, founded the settlement of Brukalice. What was life like for Boguchwał and his wife? They didn't have it easy. She ground grain in a millstone, meaning she had a large stone, threw it on the grain, and turned it with another stone. It was truly difficult work for a woman. Boguchwał must have been a true medieval gentleman, because, as one of the authors of the Book of Henryków writes, he often helped his wife by saying the telling words: "Let me bruche, and you quiver." Boguchwał was Czech, so this first Polish sentence still raises many doubts today. Nevertheless, the Book of Henryków is forever linked to him.
