IL PALIO DI SIENA. Storia, struttura e vita della festa di Piazza del Campo

THE PALIO OF SIENA. History, structure, and life of the festival in Piazza del Campo The Palio of Siena represents an enormous cultural legacy tied to city life, a common thread running through history, connecting generations, people, and the region. The race through the square is just one of the many manifestations of this popular celebration, layered over time and capable of uniting Siena, its citizens, and the entire world. The Palio is, in reality, a festival capable of opening the city to the world and demonstrating how the community can be inclusive and united. The evolution of the Palio over the centuries and how it has changed to better represent the people who celebrate it are topics we would like to explore with Professor Duccio Balestracci, former professor of Medieval History at the University of Siena, member of the Nobile Contrada del Nicchio, and author of the book "The Palio of Siena: an Italian Festival," published by Laterza. Other publications by the professor include "Unknown Lands and Strange People: Stories of Medieval Travelers," "The Battle of Montaperti," and the very recent "State of Siege. Besiegers and Besieged from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age." Contributors for Scacchiere Storico: Michele Gatto is a scholar of Greek and Roman antiquity, particularly Classical Greece and Imperial Rome. He specializes in ancient numismatics. His interests also include Byzantine history. Riccardo Marchetti is a scholar of the Middle Ages, particularly the 14th century. His analysis focuses primarily on the social and economic spheres, but he also enjoys exploring the intricate world of Italian and European institutions.
