Getting Better - Take 7: What the Song Sounded Like Before Everything Was Added
Take 7 of “Getting Better” captures the song as a fully locked-in basic track, recorded early in the Sgt. Pepper sessions - before vocals, reductions, and later overdubs reshaped the final master. At the center of this take is Paul McCartney’s 1964 Hohner Pianet C, driving the rhythm and defining the track’s forward momentum. John Lennon and George Harrison’s electric guitars interlock around the Pianet figure, while Ringo Starr’s drums anchor the performance with a tight, insistent feel. In later sessions, Paul overdubbed an additional, higher-pitched electric guitar, adding brightness and extra punch to the intro and selected sections. The finished version also features two bass parts, an approach inspired by The Beach Boys, which thickened the low end and gave the final mix its distinctive weight and movement. Further, George Martin’s acoustic piano and George Harrison’s tambura, the latter providing a continuous drone that creates a striking contrast with the song’s upbeat feel. That tambura becomes especially effective against the track’s more controversial lyrical moments, adding tension and an almost hypnotic undercurrent beneath the optimism. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sgt.
