Cìr Mhòr via Glen Rosa - Isle of Arran - Scotland | 4K

The Isle of Arran is often called 'Scotland in Miniature,' but there is nothing small about the dramatic granite peaks guarding its northern interior. This route journeys through the breathtaking expanse of Glen Rosa to conquer the sharp, iconic peak of Cir Mhòr—famously known to hillwalkers as the 'Matterhorn of Arran.' The adventure begins along the floor of Glen Rosa, a classic, glaciated U-shaped valley carved out during the last ice age. Walking alongside the crystal-clear waters of the Garbh Allt and Rosa Burn, the glen gradually narrows, flanked by the towering ridgelines of Goatfell to the east and Beinn Nuis to the west. The gentle lower path eventually gives way to a rugged, steady ascent up the head of the glen, leading toward the dramatic col at The Saddle. From The Saddle, the true scale of Arran’s alpine terrain unfolds, revealing steep drops into neighboring Glen Sannox. But it is the striking, triangular pyramid of Cir Mhòr that dominates the horizon. Rising to 799 metres (2,621 feet), this Corbett fully earns its 'Matterhorn of Arran' moniker with its steep, architectural lines and jagged granite walls. The final push to the summit is a steep, rocky scramble over Coire na h-Uaimh, requiring careful footwork across weathered slabs and boulders. Reaching the summit tor of Cir Mhòr reveals one of the most spectacular vistas in the southern Highlands. The knife-edge ridges of the Witch's Step (Ceum na Caillich) slice across the skyline, while the panoramic views stretch out across the Firth of Clyde to the Kintyre Peninsula and the mountains of the southwest mainland. It is a landscape defined by raw, primordial beauty and some of the finest mountain architecture Scotland has to offer. 📍 Location & Route Breakdown: Start/Finish: Glen Rosa Campsite / Car Park (just outside Brodick) The Glen Rosa Path: A scenic walk following the floor of the glen beneath the mountain shadows. The Saddle: The dramatic high mountain pass connecting Glen Rosa and Glen Sannox.
