Ride Better, Feel Better | Why Most Rodeo Athletes Fall Apart During the Summer
Most rodeo athletes think competing is enough. It's not. Getting on every weekend doesn't automatically prepare your body for the demands of the summer run. In fact, summer rodeo season is less about talent and more about durability. The athletes who perform in June aren't always the same athletes who are still performing in August. In this episode of the Champion Living Podcast, Doug Champion breaks down why the summer run is really a 90-day stress test. Long miles, late nights, heat, pressure, poor recovery, inconsistent nutrition, and repeated exposure to competition all create a level of cumulative fatigue that most athletes never account for. The question isn't whether you're tough enough to make it through the summer. The question is whether you've prepared your body to handle the demands that come with it. Doug explains how rodeo athletes can begin tracking daily stress, managing recovery, and building the physical capacity necessary to compete at a high level week after week. He discusses the importance of strength reserves, aerobic conditioning, movement quality, and why repeatable performance matters more than occasional peak performances. You'll also learn the most common warning signs that your body is falling behind—including chronic soreness, increasing fatigue, disrupted sleep, nagging aches and pains, declining focus, and poor recovery between rodeos. Most importantly, Doug shares practical strategies you can implement immediately to stay ahead of fatigue and keep your body performing throughout the season. From mobility work and zone-two conditioning to hydration, nutrition, sleep habits, and maintaining strength during competition season, this episode provides a roadmap for staying healthy and competitive when the miles start adding up. Because surviving the summer isn't the goal. Performing through it is.
