From our perspective, it's crucial to build up fertile soil, both in the garden and in pots; then the question of fertilizer becomes irrelevant. Chemically synthesized fertilizers are harmful to the microorganisms in the soil (and not only to them), so we wouldn't use them in either the garden or pots. We only consider organic materials (perhaps from your own garden, barn, or kitchen), which should be worked into the soil before planting. This organic fertilizer is supplemented with a layer of organic mulch.
