Director, are you there? [Ban Ki-sung] Hello. [Anchor] All heavy rain advisories were lifted overnight, but rain clouds have gathered over the Gyeongbuk region again just moments ago. Where is the area currently experiencing the heaviest rainfall, and how much more rain is expected? [Ban Ki-sung] The area currently experiencing the most rain is the region connecting the northeastern coast, central Gyeongbuk, southern Gyeongbuk, and western Gyeongbuk. If you draw a straight line, heavy rain is falling in a narrow area. Most of the areas within this region are located in Gyeongbuk. A heavy rain advisory has been reissued for the Uiseong area in Gyeongbuk. At this very moment, 17.5mm of heavy rain is falling in Seonsan, North Gyeongsang Province. Currently, it is expected that an additional 30 to 100mm of rain will fall today in the Gyeongsang region, including Daegu and North Gyeongsang, while southwestern South Gyeongsang and southern North Gyeongsang will receive 20 to 60mm. [Anchor] Is there a reason why the heavy rain is concentrated in the North Gyeongsang region like this? [Ban Ki-sung] Actually, the biggest cause was the development of a mesoscale low-pressure system over the stationary front. This mesoscale low-pressure system is not large; it is very small, but it represents a very strong atmospheric pressure. Therefore, it rapidly draws in hot and humid air from the surroundings. It has the characteristic of rapidly generating and intensifying rain clouds. This mesoscale low-pressure system mainly affected the capital area first, but as it moved down to the southern regions, heavy rain began pouring down, centered around the North Gyeongsang area. [Anchor] Earlier, we connected with a reporter and reported that the landslide advisory had been upgraded from "Caution" to "Warning," along with the on-site situation in the affected areas. With rain forecast again, it seems that extra caution is needed regarding safety in these regions. What specific areas should be monitored? [Ban Ki-sung] In areas that have received heavy rainfall, the ground is in a very weakened state. Therefore, even a small amount of rain significantly increases the probability of a landslide occurring. In addition to this, river flooding is also anticipated. Currently, the landslide crisis warning for the Gyeongbuk region is at the "Warning" level. The Warning level is the third highest risk among the four levels: Interest, Caution, Warning, and Severe. The soil has already absorbed a large amount of water, creating conditions where it can collapse even with light rain or a weak impact. The likelihood of a landslide is very high. In particular, recent landslides are primarily caused by earth currents that sweep down at high speeds, resulting in extremely catastrophic damage. Even though we are currently at the Warning level, it is a very dangerous situation where you must prepare to move to designated evacuation sites or evacuate immediately. Currently, the Gyeongbuk region is in a danger and alert state, but starting tomorrow, strong rain clouds will move up toward Seoul and the metropolitan area. Therefore, since heavier rain is expected in the metropolitan area for the time being, I anticipate that the alert level for the metropolitan and Gangwon regions will be raised to the alert stage starting tomorrow, and then likely to escalate to the severe stage sometime this week. [Anchor] Last time there was heavy rain, it reached the northern Gyeonggi and Gangwon regions as well. This time, strong rain of 20 to 30 mm per hour is forecast to be concentrated in these areas.
