First published in: "King," Dai Nippon Yubenkai Kodansha, February 1934 (Showa 9) issue Haiku poet Kikaku of Edo refuses to recite haiku for the feudal lord, despite his financial difficulties. One night, Kikaku goes out to make patterned paper for haiku, but on his way back, he encounters a terrible disaster... [Major Characters] Enomoto Kikaku: A haiku poet and disciple of Basho, living in a backstreet in Edo's Kayabacho district. Ogawa Hagakusa: A haiku poet who lives with Kikaku. Hattori Ransetsu: A close friend of Kikaku's, also from the same school. Inoue Sagami-no-kami: The feudal lord for whom Ransetsu serves. Sanoya Kizaemon: A lumber wholesaler whose hobby was haiku. Matsuo Basho Yamamoto Shugoro (June 22, 1903 - February 14, 1967) was a Japanese novelist. His real name was Shimizu Satomu. He was born in Yamanashi Prefecture. After graduating from Nishimae Elementary School in Yokohama, he lived and worked as an apprentice at the Yamamoto Shugoro Shoten in Kobikicho, Tokyo. In 1926, his novel "The Neighborhood of Sumadera" was published in Bungeishunju, marking his literary breakthrough. His novel "The Way of Japanese Women" was nominated for the Naoki Prize in the first half of 1943, but he steadfastly declined the award. Since then, he has written works such as "Yanagibashi Monogatari," "Sleepy Police Chief," "Eiga Monogatari," "The Fir Tree Remains," "Red Beard Clinic Story," "Five-Petal Camellia," "Aobeka Monogatari," "Void Travels," "A Town Without Seasons," "Sabu," and "A Long Slope." He is known for his popular historical and period novels, depicting the struggles of samurai and the sorrows of ordinary people from the perspective of the common people. He was particularly highly praised for the many masterpieces he wrote in his later years. His name is Abe Yoshimi, a voice trainer and reader.
