The first scenes were revealed in the official Nintendo Switch trailer in October 2016, but the official unveiling of Mario's next big 3D adventure occurred in January 2017 during the big Nintendo Switch presentation. It was made clear that Super Mario Odyssey would return to the roots of 3D Mario games, using sandbox-style levels that would appeal to casual players with simple missions, while also challenging veteran players with more difficult tasks. Despite omitting a hub world, the game draws inspiration from beloved classics like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. The developers, however, not only took elements from these milestones, but also from more recent titles like Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario Galaxy. In general, Odyssey aimed to be a "Best of 3D Mario" compilation, while also introducing fresh, exciting new ideas. The most essential feature: "Cappy", who accompanies Mario on his journey around the world to rescue Princess Peach from being unwillingly married to Bowser. Cappy has the ability to "capture" enemies and specific objects, allowing Mario to take control of them. For example, Mario can control a Goomba or ride a Mario Kart. With an incredible soundtrack accompanying it, Mario's world tour could very well be his best adventure yet.
