"The Mermaids of Haarlem" is a comic book by Felipe Pan and Gio Guimarães, published by Nemo, which tells the story of the Dutch resistance against the Nazi occupation. Hannie Schaft, known as "the girl with red hair," and the sisters Truus and Freddie Oversteegen were central figures. Acting as part of clandestine groups, these young women participated in daring actions against the Nazi occupiers, including transporting weapons, evacuating Jewish children, distributing anti-Nazi pamphlets, sabotaging infrastructure, and targeted assassinations of German collaborators. In this video, I discuss the story of these three teenagers, talk about the comic book The Mermaids of Haarlem, and discuss whether the representation of "strong women" has become a cliché in the cultural industry.
