To date, 35,000 people have already been relocated and 24 new villages created to make way for the giant Garzweiler mine, which covers more than 30 km2. Officially, Germany is in the midst of an energy transition: it has set itself the goal of phasing out nuclear power and replacing it with renewable energy. However, this doesn't mean it has shaken off its addiction to coal, the country's primary energy source. To extract more of this mineral, the authorities are not hesitant to swallow up villages and displace populations.
