Insight Session: Bridging Gender Data Gaps in Healthcare

This Insight Session on Bridging Gender Data Gaps in Healthcare is part of IHSCM’s ongoing work to highlight inequalities in women’s health and patient safety. The session explored how gender‑based data gaps affect diagnosis, treatment, safety events and system‑level decision‑making, and how leaders can address these gaps through culture, commissioning and practice. The session was delivered by the Research Centre for Health Innovation at Staffordshire University, focusing on the WISE Study (Women’s Inequality and Safety Enhancement) — a mixed‑methods project examining gender differences in patient safety events and women’s experiences of speaking up about unsafe care. Key Themes Covered Why gender data gaps persist across health and care How missing or poor‑quality data affects women’s safety and outcomes The role of leadership, culture and psychologically safe reporting Practical steps organisations can take to improve gender‑sensitive data collection How lived experience and staff insights can shape safer systems Speaker Charlotte is inviting support, particularly with non‑NHS organisations, as ethical approvals prevent recruitment through NHS channels.
