AMARÍLIS: como PLANTAR e CUIDAR da TULIPA brasileira
It looks like an onion, but it isn't; a lush flower grows from its bulb, but it's not a tulip. Those who read this sentence might think it's a riddle, but it's actually the amaryllis, a tropical plant that produces huge, beautiful flowers. Our gardener Carol Costa explains everything about the amaryllis, also known as the lily or Brazilian tulip. The amaryllis (Hippeastrum x hybridum) is a tropical plant native to South America. So it's a plant that's used to our hot, humid climate. Its bulb, similar to an onion (which is also a bulb), works like an instant plant capsule. Under the right conditions, it starts to absorb water and sprout. If you cut the bulb, you'll see all the parts of the plant inside, including the flower buds. As the plant starts to stretch its leaves and bloom, the "onion" dries out in the process. Meanwhile, out of sight, magic happens underground: new bulblets develop. This means that, unlike tulips, amaryllis will sprout next year and will probably produce more than one plant. If you already thought it was a generous plant, get ready to see several flowers coming out of the same bulb – it’s an abundance! These bulbs are produced in the city of Holambra by Grupo Terra Viva ( / grupo.terraviva , the largest producer of amaryllis in the world! The group produces more than 20 varieties of colors of our Brazilian tulip! It’s worth talking to a local florist or your favorite garden center and asking them to order the plant, since they are only sold through Veiling Holambra. A tip: when the amaryllis opens its flowers, you can cut off the immature pollen, that is, before it starts to turn yellow. Just go to the antennae in the center of the flower and, with scissors, cut them off. There are three good reasons for you to do this: 1 - the pollen stains clothes; 2 - it shortens the lifespan of the flowers; 3 - pollen is toxic if ingested, especially by pets. Want more tips? Here are two in one: hold back the urge to pull the stems off the bulb. Don't think that it's an onion ready to be cut; it's a plant that will sprout and produce beautiful flowers. Two reasons not to throw away dried stems: 1 - it gives a beautiful rustic effect to the vase; 2 - it prevents the bulb from dehydrating. In the video, our plant lover shows how to create an arrangement by planting several amaryllis in a tall, stylish vase. Write down the materials and follow the step-by-step instructions: – pruning shears (STIHL) – tall enameled vase – plastic vase – sandy substrate – Styrofoam – substrate for seedlings – perlite Watering is very simple: always wet the substrate, avoiding wetting the plant or the bulbs. And before watering, use a finger test (link below) to check if the soil is dry, since fungus can appear and rot the plant. Did you forget and the bulb started to rot? Unplant it, let it dry in an airy place for a few weeks, and then plant it again. If there is any part that has rotted, cut it off with a knife and sprinkle it with cinnamon powder. After the flowering, get ready for a bunch of ribbon-shaped leaves, very long and with a very pretty effect. Enjoy the foliage and wait; next year there will be more flowers! Just keep an eye out for caterpillars, okay? The plant is so beautiful that it will attract butterflies and, if you're careful, you might even have some visitors for lunch :-D Thanks to: Grupo Terra Viva - / grupo.terraviva Veiling Holambra - / veilingholambra Todo o Jardim - / allgarden.holambra STIHL - / stihloficial Hotel 1948 - / hotel_1948 Net Shopping Garden What: plants, seeds, fertilizers, substrates, insecticides, supplies in general (except books) Where: https://www.netshopgarden.com.br Discount: 10% Coupon: INTENSIVÃO Biological control: https://www.netshopgarden.com.br/prod...
