Axe felling a tree against its lean: Trying out the Schwarzwald Technique

I am coining "Schwarzwald Technique" for a method of felling that is shown used in the Black Forest of Germany in the film Die letzten Holzriesen im Schwarzwald (Gottlieb P. Cerny 1955)    • Gottlieb P. Cerny - Die letzten Holzriesen...   for felling a tree against it's lean. I tried to interpolate the steps that weren't shown or were lost in translation and gave it a try for myself. Note the disclaimer in the video: this is not a how-to, this is just me trying out a historic felling technique. I also referenced The Ax Book: The Lore and Science of the Woodcutter by Dudley Cook, which was originally published in 1981 as Keeping Warm with an Ax: A Woodcutter's Manual. There's been several editions and it can be found new, used, and hardcopy or e-book at various libraries. Felling and processing this tree is part of my efforts for this year's Axe Cordwood Challenge #AxeCordwoodChallenge2024 You can find a playlist, which I will be updating, of for this year's challenge here:    • The White Ash: Tree felling, processing, a...   And some previous #AxeCordwoodChallenge videos here:    • Axe Cordwood Challenge Info   and here    • Must Watch List for Axe CordWood Challenge   via Steven Edholm @Skillcult, who started the Challenge. This fits nicely into this year's Coordwood Challenge new Mini challenge: The low stump challenge.
