Calamansi Farm Visit in Bohol
In this episode, I’m taking you on a tour of Jake’s farm in Bohol—the largest calamansi farm I’ve seen on the island so far. Bohol has become one of the most expensive places for food because we import so much to feed the tourism industry, leaving local growers completely left out. Jake is a 39-year-old professional who left corporate Manila to return to the soil and carry on his family’s agricultural legacy. On his two-hectare farm, Jake grows calamansi, a high-demand citrus that is becoming famous around the world. By keeping this slow agriculture enterprise local, he single-handedly employs nearly a dozen people, injecting vital livelihoods into a community untouched by tourism dollars. These perennial trees produce fruit year-round for over twenty years, proving that our living land is worth far more standing and sustained than cut down. When we export raw, we import poverty, which is why keeping value-added manufacturing close to the farm changes the math of the forest. I started the pursuit of coconuts to come back to the plants and the hands who nourish them. We are here to spark a local renaissance and shift from commodity to community. Not hype. Systems.
