In 1607, the lands were granted to the Jesuits, who built the Church of São Miguel and catechized the Indigenous people. In 1757, the Jesuits were expelled by the Dutch invasions. In 1758, Judge Bernardo Coelho Gama Casco founded Vila Nova de Extremoz, the first village in Rio Grande do Norte. The name was chosen in homage to the Portuguese city of Estremoz, where the Ouvidor was from. In the following decades, Extremoz became an economic and livestock center. In 1855, the town's headquarters were transferred to Boca da Mata, which was renamed Ceará-Mirim. In 1963, Extremoz separated from Ceará-Mirim and became a municipality in Rio Grande do Norte. The municipality was officially established on February 2, 1964.
