Visit to an Active, Historic Gold Mine in the San Gabriel Mountains: Part 1 of 2

Los Angeles County Mine #23: Recently, I was fortunate enough to gain access to a very historic gold mine located in the San Gabriel Mountains. Only those with an invitation are allowed to explore this mine, so if you happen to know where this is, please do not trespass. This place was a treat to explore, and I’m glad to have such an amazing local gold mine on my channel. The history of this mine is very interesting, but in order to protect its location I can’t go into too much detail. The official history of this mine begins in the 1880’s when it was first mentioned in state mining reports, though it may actually go all the way back to the 1860’s when gold-bearing veins were reportedly discovered in the area. It was during the 1880’s, however, that the mill building seen in the video was constructed. The mine would change hands a few times over the years, and each owner had varying degrees of success. The mine’s most productive period was during the 1920’s and 1930’s, when it produced millions in today’s money. The mine shut down in the early 40’s, and since then only small scale prospecting has been done. Special thanks to Lars for giving me a tour of the property and letting me explore his awesome mine!
