They have transistor-controlled DC motors, which replaced the earlier relay-controlled AC motors in the older electric locomotives. The locomotive type has been used for both goods trains and passenger trains. Since the locomotives need to switch running ends when changing direction, they have increasingly been replaced by motorcars in the passenger trains. They are now only used on the smaller interregional lines. Both the locomotive and the carriages in the video are from the 1980s.
