A varicocele is an enlargement of the veins that drain the testicles. This can cause pain, infertility, and other problems. In varicocele embolization, a small catheter is inserted into a vein in the leg and guided up to the varicocele. Then, a small amount of embolic material (such as coils or foam) is injected to block the enlarged veins. This procedure is usually done under general anesthesia and takes about an hour.
