In this video, I'll show you what I check during a technical visit to an olive grove in the middle of July. At this time of year, it's not enough to simply see if the tree is green. We need to assess how it's actually responding to the heat, irrigation, fruit load, and the management practices implemented during the spring. During the visit, I focus on three key points: Vegetative growth I check if the olive tree is still producing new shoots, if the growth is sufficient, and if the tree has enough active leaves to sustain the harvest and prepare for the next season. Foliar analysis I take leaf samples to determine the actual nutritional status of the olive grove. This allows me to detect deficiencies, excesses, and imbalances before deciding which nutrients are worth applying. Fruit set I check how many olives remain on the tree, how they are distributed, and whether the tree has the capacity to retain them throughout the summer. July is a crucial month. What we observe now helps us make better decisions regarding irrigation, nutrition, and management, avoiding unnecessary treatments and problems during the harshest months.
