Lancaster Woodturners coffee hour #306 June 4 2026

John Kelsey: Clubs’ news, plus a discussion regarding mentoring and general advice for new(er) woodturners. Scott Waterfall: Scott shows a large grapevine ‘natural’ pot. Jeff Hankinson: Jeff joins Jim Bowman’s ‘Funnel Club’ with a nicely feathered Aspen poplar dish, as well as a (non-funnel) cherry dish, with a brief discussion about ‘hard’ vs. ‘soft’ transitions within a piece. Ernie Conover: Ernie follow up on last week’s discussion about ‘non-pointed’ Forstner bits, including an interesting history of how they came to be and what they were used for. Monte Richard: Monte shows a handsome two-tiered service tray crafted out of cherry, segmented walnut, and mesquite. Don Smith: Don shows his two-tiered service tray as a comparison to Monte’s. Jim Duxbury: The always creative turner shows his glue-up bowls out of scrap wood, including a ‘pointy’ one created using the ‘lost wood’ process. Dux also shows his rather significant clamping table for precision glue-ups. David Hudgel: David brings out his multi-axis box from several years ago (all turned from a single piece of wood, including the finial). Unfortunately, he cannot recall how he made it! Jim Duxbury: Responding to a request, Jim shows images of his latest and greatest multi-axis Dux Chuck, explaining many of the components and how to use it (the dovetail on the sliding piece is eight degrees, for those wishing to make one…good luck). Don Smith: Don wraps up coffee hour with a nice three-legged plant stand.
