Chevy 1500 5.3L V8 FUEL ECONOMY vs 2.7L TurboMax | NOT What I Expected!!

I review the Chevy/GMC 1500 5.3L V8 Engine and compare its Fuel Economy (MPG) to the 2.7L Turbomax I-4 Engine. Many people have speculated that the larger displacement V8 engines can actually be more fuel efficient then the smaller turbo charged engines like the EcoBoost engine and the Turbomax engine in pick up trucks. Turns out Its TRUE! I was also expecting the 2.7L turbomax engine to be much closer but the 5.3L blew everyone out of the water. starting on the city section this V8 engine was surprisingly tame and was only behind the 2.7L Ecoboost engine which I did not see coming. but this V8 is not our typical push rod V8 there are a number of factors that help it save fuel. firstly is the variable displacement oil pump which I personally don't like but when cruising at Low RPMs it works very well to help save fuel. additionally this engine is running 0w20 oil which is pretty light weight as should also help to have fuel. the big fuel saving technology in these 5.3L V8 engines from GM is the active fuel management or AFM this is when 4 cylinder become deactivated hense the term cylinder deactivation. now AFM ran from 2014 to 2018 but in 2019 GM introduced another cylinder deactivation technology called Dynamic fuel management or DFM. this is a more advanced cylinder deactivation technology which all cylinder can shut down at different times meaning the engine has up to 17 different firing patterns. this according to GM can run 60% of the time while the truck is in normal driving conditions and saves 9% more fuel then AFM alone. that is great for the city and country roads but on the highway this big displacement V8 can simply rely on the displacement for power and rather then having to downshift or shove boost into the engine like you would for a turbo charged smaller displacement engine. Overall this 5.3L V8 overachieved my expectation!! 00:00 - Intro 00:36 - Engine Specs 01:42 - 5.3L Advantages 02:45 - Active Fuel Management (AFM) 03:25 - City MPGs 04:28 - Country MPGs 05:14 - Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) 06:25 - Final Country MPGs 07:34 - Highway MPGs 09:03 - Final CALCULATED MPGs
