In July 2025, archaeologists from the University of Houston discovered something no one expected to find in the jungles of Belize: the intact tomb of a Maya king buried 1,700 years ago. A sealed chamber, untouched for 17 centuries, perfectly preserved beneath the Northeast Acropolis of Caracol. His name was Te K'ab Chaak, the first known ruler of Caracol. The man who ascended the throne in 331 AD founded a dynasty that lasted 460 years and transformed his city into a superpower capable of defeating even Tikal in 562 AD. Inside his tomb: a perfectly intact jade mask, eleven vessels depicting gods of the underworld, shells from the Pacific Ocean brought from 800 kilometers away, and obsidian from Teotihuacan—the most powerful city in all of Mesoamerica at that time.
