BBC Radio 1 - Top 20 (02-Apr-1978) (*almost FULL SHOW!)

*** You can now hear un-cut versions of my Chart Show recordings in full on my MixCloud channel: https://www.mixcloud.com/RetroRadioUK/ *YouTube's automatic music copyright sensor means I've had to edit out the following tracks in order to upload the rest of the show: No 1: Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights Simon Bates begins a new era for the Top 20 show with his first regular programme - although he was no stranger to Sunday evenings, having stood in for Tom Browne on the rare occasions he took a holiday over the previous couple of years. Although only a year younger than Tom Browne - aged 31 at the time of this show - Bates brought a new tone to the programme, his characteristic loud-and-proud style that added increasingly earth-shattering significance to every chart position! To begin with, the format was little changed ahead of a more major revamp later in the year (November) when the programme would gain an extra hour and become the Top 40. With Simon's finger on the fader, the opening "Brother" theme by CCS is given a slightly more ballsy presence - perhaps in keeping with Simon's own presentation style! The familiar up and down sound effects jingles help guide us through the chart movements, while there's a sprinkling of extra Radio 1 ID jingles and a time-check or two to prove it's live. There's one new innovation - no DJ link at all between numbers 8 (Darts) and 7 (Nick Lowe), just a straight run between the records, punctuated only by a Radio 1 jingle. Little did I realise when I hit the Play + Record keys on this programme as a teenager that around 15 years later I'd be in the studio side by side with Simon every morning on LBC... but that's another story! :) This programme was captured onto a funky blue BASF LH C120 cassette - I thought on my Boots Audio radio-cassette recorder... but if it really is in stereo then I must have popped the tape into dad's Panasonic music centre!
