Nine European countries, including Spain, agreed on Monday with Ukraine to create the Integrated Ballistic Missile Defense Coalition, with the aim of improving one of the main weaknesses in Ukrainian defense in its conflict with Russia. The agreement was signed by Ukraine, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, which have witnessed in recent days how the airspace of their Ukrainian ally has been unable to prevent attacks from Moscow. This agreement, reached at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the Quai d'Orsay, was sealed within the framework of the new Coalition of Volunteers summit, co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron and attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The summit aimed to strengthen military support for Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia to facilitate a ceasefire and the resumption of peace negotiations. Following the summit, Zelensky stated that the anti-ballistic missile system program is "one of the key joint initiatives to strengthen all of Europe," as well as "prevent the escalation of the conflict." For his part, Macron asserted that "investing in Ukraine" is equivalent to "investing in the security of Europe": "The history of our continent has shown us the high cost of standing idly by in the face of aggression. What we are building is not only for Ukraine; it is a demonstration that Europe can take responsibility for its own security." Furthermore, he emphasized that these packages of measures are "purely defensive" and are not intended to escalate violence. The President of the Élysée Palace also announced that Ukraine plans to acquire 16 Rafale fighter jets, which are expected to be operational between 2028 and 2029, and SAMP/T NG anti-aircraft batteries. He added that neighboring countries will host exercises in the coming months to validate the "deployment plans."
