HOUSE RENTS INCREASE 100% IN AVGADI Finding a summer rental in the Aydınlar (Avgadı) neighborhood of Erdemli, a neighborhood where most residents flock to escape the heat during the summer months, has proven quite difficult. Last year, rental prices for seasonal rentals soared from 4,000 to 5,000 TL to 8,000-10,000 TL this year due to a surge in demand. Residents struggling to find housing are complaining about the high rents. As the coronavirus pandemic changed the housing preferences of those seeking an isolated lifestyle, rents in the Avgadı neighborhood of Erdemli have increased by 100%. Seasonal rental prices for summer houses in Avgadı range from 8,000 to 10,000 TL, with residents complaining, "There are no more houses left to rent." The pandemic has changed residents' living preferences. Curfews implemented as part of precautionary measures have also led residents to detached houses. This has increased demand for detached and villa-style homes in Avgadı, one of Erdemli's summer neighborhoods. Residents reported that demand has left Avgadı with no available rentals. Muhammet Erden, who runs a market 12 months a year in Avgadı, said, "Due to the pandemic, there has been significant demand on the island. Especially with the outbreak, people have started to flee to quieter areas. Rental prices in Avgadı have increased by nearly 100 percent compared to previous years. Despite this 100 percent increase, some people want rentals. There is demand, but no supply. It's as if there are no more rentals left. Last year, rents here were between 4,000 and 6,000 TL. Now, these prices have increased by 100 percent, ranging from 8,000 to 10,000 TL. Villa-style homes start at 20,000 TL. Now, people prefer cool, quiet places that can be reached quickly from Erdemli. With the construction of the Yolo roads, it no longer takes us so long to get to Avgadı." A cool spot 20 minutes away in Erdemli is everyone's choice. Many people ask us for rentals. But there are very few people willing to rent their homes," she said. Yemliha Topal, a resident of the Avgadı plateau who considers herself lucky, said, "I can say I'm lucky this year. I rented my plateau house. But the significant increase in rents this year has really put a strain on residents. My advice is to avoid looking for a place to live when the summer season arrives. At the end of the season, they can sign a contract for the next season and rent for less. Finding a place to rent in the plateaus will be even more difficult in the coming years. Considering that rents have increased 100% this year, I say, God help the renters next year."
