When the movie first started, our participants were just completely cracking up at the absolute chaos. Coming from our community where village dogs are usually pretty calm and well-behaved, watching a wild blue alien pretend to be a pet and destroy half of Hawaii had the entire room laughing out loud. "Why would they keep a dog that bites the furniture and screams?!" one villager asked, totally baffled by Stitch's behavior. But what really made this reaction special was how the village connected with the core message of the movie. Our community is built on strong bonds and helping each other raise our kids, so watching Nani fight so hard to keep her little sister Lilo out of foster care really struck a chord. By the time the movie explained that "Ohana means family, and nobody gets left behind," you could hear a pin drop in the room. It was such an authentic, emotional moment, and it just proves that the love for family is exactly the same no matter where you live in the world.
