Mother's Day Sunburn Finally sunshine! Finally cycling again! Finally a night in a tent! With this motto in mind, we started our microadventure on Mother's Day 2021. First, we cycled from Bullenhausen near Hamburg along the Elbe River to Hoopte. We continued along the Ilmenau dike until, shortly before St. Dionys, we followed the Neetze Canal on beautiful forest paths to the Elbe Lateral Canal. Here, the Inselsee (Island Lake) surprised us with an open kiosk and restrooms, giving us a glimpse of normality AFTER Corona. It felt good to see children playing, adults enjoying themselves, and the general activity at the lake again. Fortified by beer, we soon reached the Scharnebeck ship lift – one of the largest of its kind. And we were lucky. We were just able to witness this technical marvel in action. In Bleckede, the Elbe Cycle Path welcomed us back. Passing the Elbe ferry in Neu Darchau, which we'll use on our return trip on day two, we cycled to the charming village of Drethem. Here, we decided to forgo the official Elbe Cycle Path and instead stay right by the river on a small gravel track that eventually led us to a small promontory where we pitched our tent later that evening. Two friendly locals honored us with a brief visit and pleasant conversation. No one wanted to chase us away. Quite the opposite, in fact. We felt that our enthusiasm for the beautiful natural surroundings resonated with our visitors, and we made every effort not to abuse the trust placed in us. We sat quietly and reverently on the banks of the Elbe until dusk before setting up our tent. We were able to listen to the birds and watch the beavers at work. As always, it was a truly special experience! : ... I think that if you behave responsibly (no littering!
