The God Who Doesn’t Always Give Second Chances: What 1 John 5:16–17 Really Says

Most Christians instinctively assume that God will always provide another opportunity for repentance. First John 5:16–17 challenges that assumption directly. This article examines what the apostle John meant when he wrote that there is sin leading to death — and why he declined to instruct his readers to pray for those who commit it. Drawing on Old Testament precedent, the eyewitness account embedded in Acts 5, and the bilateral structure of John’s own theology of sin, the article argues that this passage is not a theological puzzle but a pastoral declaration: the same God who promises forgiveness to every confessing sinner also reserves sovereign freedom to close the window of that opportunity. Understanding both sides of that reality is not a threat to Christian assurance. It is the completion of it.
