07-N.T.Wright’s Social Gospel

As we have seen, according to N.T.Wright, the „traditional‟, classic, Reformed view of justification – salvation – is wide of the mark. Let‟s remind ourselves of this „traditional‟ view of salvation: God, in his grace, delivers guilty, ruined sinners from his wrath, delivers them through faith in Christ‟s propitiation accomplished on the cross, delivers them by the Spirit of God, so that they, as justified sinners, might lead a life of progressive sanctification into transformation into Christ‟s likeness, a life which ends in eternal glory at Christ‟s return. Wright sees other ends in the death and resurrection of Christ. One of these is what I call „Wright‟s Social Gospel‟. Although I have referred to this in passing, in this chapter I want explore this in more detail. In short, I am talking about Wright‟s understanding of the believer‟s life or purpose following his justification.
