How to express Like and Dislike in Greek #greekforbeginners
Today, I am going to teach you different ways you can express like and dislike in Greek. The most common phrase is “μου αρέσει” ή “μ΄αρέσει” (like) and “δε μου αρέσει” ή “δε μ’αρέσει “ (dislike). Μου αρέσει is the greek equivalent of like when referring to singular nouns. Where in English you would say “I like summer” in Greek you say “Μου αρέσει το καλοκαίρι”. The actual translation would be closer to italian mi piace or spanish me gusta. And i say this because unlike English, the person or the thing that is liked is the subject of the verb. Let’s have a look at some examples. Μου αρέσει η λεμονάδα. Η λεμονάδα (nominative case) is the SUBJECT of the verb αρέσει and it should be always accompanied by its article. A more accurate translation for this structure would be the lemonade pleases me. If you like more than one thing, you should use “ μου αρέσουν” ή “μ’αρέσουν” Μου αρέσουν οι φράουλες. Strawberries are pleasing me. If you like doing something (hobbies, interests) after the phrase “ μου αρέσει” follows the particle να and the verb in present tense. Μου αρέσει να κολυμπάω. I like swimming. Μου αρέσει να διαβάζω βιβλία. I like reading books. Conjugation Μου αρέσει/ αρέσουν Σου αρέσει/ αρέσουν Του/της αρέσει/ αρέσουν Μας αρέσει/ αρέσουν Σας αρέσει/ αρέσουν Τους αρέσει/ αρέσουν Σας αρέσει ο καφές; Do you (plural) like coffee? Της αρέσουν τα ταξίδια. She likes trips. Alternative expressions: People: Συμπαθώ or τον/ την πάω Συμπαθείς τον Νίκο; Do you like Nick? Τον πάω πολύ. Φαίνεται καλό παιδί. I like him. He seems like a good guy. Opinions: Συμφωνώ Οι γονείς μου συμφωνούν σε όλα, εκτός από τη μουσική. My parents agree (have the same opinion) on everything, apart from music. Προτιμώ (= prefer) Ποιο πουκάμισο προτιμάς για το δείπνο; Which shirt do you prefer for dinner? Με ευχαριστεί (= to enjoy/ to please me) Κάνε ότι σε ευχαριστεί! Do whatever pleases you! Food/ Drink: απολαμβάνω (=enjoy) Κάθε πρωί απολαμβάνω μια ζεστή κούπα καφέ. Every morning I enjoy a warm cup of coffee. If something is your favourite thing to eat, drink, do or discuss use the following expression: “Είναι το αγαπημένο μου” Το αγαπημένο μου νησί είναι η Λευκάδα. My favourite island is Lefkada. DISLIKE (Δε μου αρέσει) Greek culture and western cultures in general is all about being encouraging. If someone will offer you flowers and you respond I don’t like them, you can come across as offensive or even aggressive and you might put people off. In this case you can either break it down with some softeners, Δε μου αρέσει και τόσο το ποδόσφαιρο. I don’t really like football. Or You can go for alternative phrases: Δεν είναι του γούστου μου (it’s not my style..) Αυτό το φόρεμα δεν είναι του γούστου μου, αλλά εσένα σου πάει. This dress isn’t my style, but it suits you. Δεν ενδιαφέρομαι για.. (i’m not interested in) Δεν ενδιαφέρομαι για την πολιτική. I am not into politics. Δεν τρελαίνομαι για.. (I am not crazy about..) Δεν τρελαινομαι για μιούζικαλ. I am not crazy about musicals. ✰ SOCIAL MEDIA ✰ • instagram ➭ / linguatree_ • facebook ➭ / linguatreee ✰ PRIVATE LESSONS ✰ Superprof UK: Yiuli Tsogka, Greek lessons ✰ FILMING EQUIPMENT✰ iPhone 11 Pro #GreekGrammar
