Happy Anniversary, ChaCha! ❤️ We set out to explore the hidden Paliza Goblin Colony, one of the most unusual and lesser-known hiking destinations in the region. This hike takes you through a scenic ponderosa pine forest to a fascinating collection of volcanic hoodoos, rock spires, and erosional formations that hikers have nicknamed "goblins" because many resemble faces, creatures, and strange figures carved by nature over thousands of years. As you walk among the formations, you'll notice that each one seems to take on a different appearance depending on the angle and lighting. Some look like people, others resemble animals, and a few look like they stepped straight out of a fantasy story. The low-angle sunlight in the morning and evening creates shadows that make the "faces" and features stand out even more, which is how the area earned its memorable nickname: the Goblin Colony. Geologically, these formations are known as hoodoos and were formed from ancient volcanic ash and tuff deposits left behind by eruptions from the Jemez volcanic field millions of years ago. Over time, wind, rain, snow, and freezing temperatures slowly eroded the softer rock, leaving behind the strange and unique formations we see today. The Paliza Goblin Colony is an unmarked destination that requires navigation using apps such as AllTrails or OnX Backcountry. The hike offers a perfect combination of solitude, beautiful forest scenery, and unique geological features that make you feel like you've discovered a hidden treasure in the Jemez Mountains. We spent the day exploring the goblins, enjoying the peaceful surroundings, and making new memories together on our anniversary. It was the perfect way to celebrate another year of adventures, laughter, and time spent outdoors.
