I recorded this episode with my feet in Lake Atitlán—my home, the place where I am completely held—to talk about something I decided not to hide: my grieving process after my mother's passing, and all the emotions that have arisen within me since she left. I'm not here to give you a pretty or tidy version. I'm here to tell you what it's like to live it honestly: with sadness and tenderness at the same time, with anger and gratitude without them canceling each other out, with days when the pain overwhelms me and days when life tastes sweet again. I learned—in my body, not in theory—that contradictory emotions can coexist. That I don't have to choose one. That emotional honesty is precisely that: letting everyone breathe, without forcing them to tell a sanitized story. And something profound was revealed when I stopped fighting the pain and began to hold it tenderly, as one holds someone they love: I discovered I was never alone in holding it. My mother's spirit holds me. The earth beneath my feet holds me. The water of this lake holds me. And, finally, I hold myself. Because grief brings many gifts. But the deepest of all is not ceasing to hurt: it is learning to love yourself completely while you grieve, and knowing you are supported from the outside… and from within. This is Lake Atitlán. My home. The mirror where I remember, again and again, how important it is to open ourselves to what sustains us: what comes from outside and what lives within.
