■ Horses, Becoming Family Some people say they experience an incomparable happiness and find solace in the bond with animals. Kim Du-ri (41) left the city to settle in Jeju Island to live with horses. She lives with her companion horses, named Tiffany, Hyang-i, Cello, and Aloe. Recently, two pregnant horses have joined the family. What preparations are Du-ri's family making for their new additions? Kim Du-ri first developed a connection with horses eight years ago, when she happened to work at an equestrian center. What began as curiosity changed the course of her life. As she grew closer, she fell in love with them and witnessed the suffering they endured. She dreamed of raising her own horse, and as if by fate, the opportunity to realize that dream arrived. ■ Seeing Myself in You As a child, nature was a comfort and a friend to Kim Du-ri. When she grew weary of the adults' prejudices—obedient children become good, and disobedient ones become mischievous—she sought nature. When she climbed a tree branch and dangled, she felt as if the tree was saying, "Yes, you're a child. It's okay." Knowing the comfort nature offers, she takes her children out into the wild. Rather than worrying about falling behind other children, Duri wants to let her children freely express themselves, freely playing without interference, as if from the depths of their hearts. Her daughters, perhaps understanding her heart, climb trees and lie down in the dirt, just like Duri did when she was young, experiencing nature with both body and soul. ■ Waiting Learned from Horses Kim Duri not only cares for her horses, but also trains them daily. Because coexistence with humans is the stark reality for horses, she believes it's not beneficial for them to be left alone, unable to communicate with humans. Although she started this work for the horses, she learned a great deal during the process of training them. At first, she wanted to become a competent horse teacher. However, the horses didn't respond as she had hoped. A belated realization came: the horses had no reason to follow her instructions. She had to open their hearts and seek their consent first. She approached them only as much as they wanted, and when they expressed resistance, she retreated and waited. To her, who constantly trained herself through repeated setbacks, the horses were like teachers. ■ How to Live in Harmony with Nature Kim Du-ri believes that the greatest good a person can do for nature is "study." Believing that understanding nature is the key to truly loving it, Du-ri has been learning how to communicate with horses from foreign experts for the past five years. She is now writing a book to share her experience of connecting with nature. The endless waiting she experienced while training her horses has made Du-ri realize how small she truly is, and she believes this is how nature nurtures her. She is grateful to nature for nurturing her into a person capable of emotionally connecting with horses and for providing her with positive energy. She continues to meet horses today.
