Lost Places: Bunker Fort Markendorf (Infanteriewerk, Pionierübungsplatz) bei Jüterbog

The small fort of Markendorf (infantry fort) is a small, still well-preserved fort (35m x 12m) built for mortar firing tests. A larger fort (62m x 20m) was located a little further to the northwest. The entire complex is constructed of solid reinforced concrete and a mixed design incorporating French and Belgian elements. However, the test site was never actually fired upon, as the mortars were ordered to the Western Front in 1914. The small fort is easy to find. Unfortunately, we were unable to locate the larger fort on our tour. Both forts are situated on a vast military training area, which was last used by the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany (GSFG). GSFG tanks driving over the larger fort apparently regularly crashed through the roofs of the complex, causing considerable damage. The GSFG filled in the tunnels and leveled other parts. Later, after the troops withdrew, two tunnels were excavated again. If you're not familiar with the large fort, you might accidentally stand on top of it without realizing it. Construction of the forts began in 1908 and was completed in 1914.
