America's Missing "Mystical Ninja" | Bōken Jidai Katsugeki Goemon | PS2, 2000
Among the PlayStation 2's earliest titles in the year 2000 was Konami's Bouken Jidai Katsugeki Goemon, an epic 3D action RPG that's a spin-off/re-imagining of its popular Ganbare Goemon series. It's famously the last title that American game publisher Working Designs was working on before they folded in 2005, and there's a fascinating story behind it. More fascinating than that, however, is that a prototype of the localized game, Mystical Ninja Goemon Zero, was released online in 2021, and is fully playable in English with just a few minor errors/blemishes regarding text and many gameplay improvements over the original Japanese title that makes it the definitive version...which sadly never saw an official release. Here's a bit of the history behind the game and a review--enjoy.
