Medium to Small Case Diff Swap Fail + Axle Upgrade | e36 Drift Build Ep 7

After getting the 36 back on the road prepping for its first drift event is in full swing. The first order of business is swapping the diff to a welded one and upgrading the axles. The decision was made to try swap a small case differential in as it offers a better ratio to shorted the gears and increase torque to the rear wheels. To make up for the size difference of the differential axle spacers or thicker CV's are needed. We choose to upgrade the CV's to stronger one out of a V8 Commodore (part number below), there are a straight swap just requiring the bolt holes to be drilled out from m8 to m10. The swap also required the driveshaft to be changed to a small case one as it is longer. After installing the small case diff that was already welded issues were experienced with the axle popping out and leading to a CV failure. As a drift event was fast approaching, the decision was made to go back to the medium case diff to get the car going. However, I have no doubt you can make this conversion work if you weld the axle stubs into the diff or cut a second groove for the split ring on the stubs.
